·         The State of Washington has chosen a CIO. Governor Chris Gregoire named Tony Tortorice to head Information Services for the State of Washington. Prior to joining the IS Department for the State of Washington, Tortorice was the Chief Information Officer at the Los Angeles Unified School District. ·         Barbara Carlini leaves her role as VP at Motorola to take the CIO seat at Dean Foods.

·         Borders Group makes some major changes in their IT Organization appointing Paul Devitt Director of E-Commerce Systems and selecting Scott Laverty as Chief Information Officer.

·         KPMG selected Jim Routh to be the new Chief Information Security Officer for the company.

·         Capital One Financial recently announced two major promotions in their IT organization promoting Marty Wilson to Vice President of IT. Wilson was the Senior Director of End-User Services prior to her promotion. Also, Scott H. Goodman was promoted to Managing Vice President of Audit, Information Systems, and Enterprise Projects.

·         The United States Air Force announced the birth of its first numbered cyberwarfare component.  Major General Richard Webber will be its first commander. Read the press release here: Air Force Cyberwarfare

·         After a lengthy debate in the Oklahoma Senate, Gov. Brad Henry signed a bill creating the first ever Chief Information Officer position for the state of Oklahoma.  The bill makes Oklahoma the 47th state to have a Chief Information Officer. ·         Peter N. Schmidt has been appointed Chief Information Officer of the National Parkinson Foundation. View the press release here: NPF New CIO

·         Emma Garrison-Alexander, former NSA official, was named Chief Information Officer of the TSA. TSA is a division of the Department of Homeland Security and operates with a $400 million IT budget.  View the press release here: TSA CIO

·         On June 13th the Department of Housing and Urban Development selected Jerry Williams to serve as its Chief Information Officer.

 IT Outsourcing Contracts

 

·         On May 20th HCL Technologies signed an outsourcing services deal with media giant MTV networks.  Services to be provided by HCL include digital content creation, media asset management, community networking, and programming on various platforms.

·         The state of Utah recently signed a potential 10 year contract with eGovernment firm NIC. NIC will manage the official government portal http://utah.gov for an initial term of four years with six, single-year renewal options. The state of Utah has been partnered with NIC since 1999. The partnership has enabled Utah to be a consistent national leader in government IT performance.

·         Xerox Corporation and Fuji Xerox, inked a five-year contract to manage the worldwide print operations for Procter & Gamble.  The contract will reduce P&G’s operational cost by an estimated 20-25%. P&G believes that in addition to the cost savings the contract will reduce related power usage by 30% and paper consumption by 20% annually. Xerox will provide on-site training as well as a Web portal for consumables procurement and employee support.

·         On June 4th IBM announced several client wins for their Lotus collaboration software.  Some of the clients listed are The Coca-Cola Company, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Fidelity Investments, Hyundai, Liberty Mutual, Nationwide, and HSBC among a host of other companies.  IBM’s Lotus collaboration software has been seen as the cost alternative to Microsoft. Many believe that this is the reason for their recent success in the current economy.

·         Indiana University recently announced a new enterprise license agreement with Microsoft Corp.  In the agreement all students, faculty and staff will be given access to popular Microsoft products as IU has received unlimited licenses and software maintenance for its server software.  IU will be first in line for any personal productivity advancements at Microsoft as part of the agreement.   The four-year enterprise agreement is part of IU’s strategic IT plan dubbed, Empowering People.
